XVII ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS OLYMPIAD. PROVINCIAL PHASE

The Provincial Phase of the XVII Economics Olympiad was held on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. The exams for students from Gran Canaria took place at the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Tourism (Tafira University Campus). The exams took place at the Training and Conference Center for students from Fuerteventura and at the Lanzarote University School of Tourism (affiliated with the ULPGC) in Tahíche. A total of 116 students participated, of which 102 were from different schools in Gran Canaria, nine from Lanzarote, all from the Yaiza Secondary School, and five from Fuerteventura, all from the Gran Tarajal Secondary School. The organizing committee thanks the lecturers and teachers involved with the examination day organization, in particular María José Márquez Cerdeña, teacher of IES San Diego de Alcalá of Fuerteventura, and the lecturer Amós Farrujia Coello from Lanzarote University School of Tourism.

The test content meets the prioritized assessment criteria for the University Entrance Exam (PAU) subject “Business and Business Model Design.” Participants had a maximum of 90 minutes to complete the test, which consisted of a theoretical and practical section, multiple-choice questions, and numerical exercises.

The organizing committee for the provincial phase is chaired by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Tourism of the ULPGC, Dr. María Victoria Ruiz Mallorquí. Its functions are to evaluate the tests, grade the exercises, rank the participants, and determine the three finalists who will participate in the national phase.

The finalists’ names will be announced on the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Tourism website in April.

Open Days sessions at ULPGC

On Thursday, March 27, the ULPGC Open Days were held in morning and afternoon sessions. This event is aimed specifically at students in their second year of High School and Advanced Vocational Training. Still, it is also open to parents and anyone interested in learning more about the ULPGC.

The morning session was broadcast live. Both sessions took place in the auditorium, with many students in attendance. The Dean and Vice Dean of Communication and Research and the students gave a presentation in which they introduced the students to the different degrees and double degrees offered by the Faculty.

Videos were shown describing the characteristics of each degree, the mobility and exchange programs, and the various agreements held by the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Tourism. Information was provided about the mentor program to support students in their first weeks at the Faculty and the “Training in Mathematics for Economics and Business” course to help those entering the Faculty lacking training in this area.

Students from the Faculty’s student council shared information with those who visited us and accompanied them on a tour of the various buildings to facilitate their familiarization with the Faculty’s facilities.

Experiences and Projects of Our Graduates

Alba Ramírez and Leticia Calderín are two graduates of the ULPGC, specifically with a Double Degree in Industrial Organization Engineering and Business Administration and a Double Degree in Business Administration, respectively. Both have embarked on a promising project: the Ascenda Foundation.

They are convinced that Canarian students deserve broader access to opportunities, both in Spain and abroad, and that is why they founded Ascenda. Ascenda was born from the conviction they both share: Canarian talent is immense, but it is limited by geographical and, sometimes, sociocultural barriers.

Alba and Leticia have had extraordinary experiences locally—for example, doing internships at renowned companies in the Canary Islands—and abroad, studying or working in the United States, Paris, and the United Kingdom, among other destinations.

These experiences have made them realize that many students are unaware of the opportunities after university studies: Is a master’s degree the right path to achieve my goals? Which one should I apply for? What job will effectively boost my career? What options do I have outside the island?

They are embarking on the “Propulsa” program, the mentoring program they are launching this March.

In summary: • They will select 5 Canarian university students for the program. • For 12 months, they will offer +50 hours of personalized mentoring, Resource guidance, Support in applying for scholarships and Jobs, Workshops, Conferences, and networking opportunities with leaders in various fields (e.g., PhD students at Harvard, CEOs of MedTech, etc.)
You can contact the Ascenda Foundation on its website.

Les Roches, a partner of the Faculty of Business Economics and Tourism, is the world’s second-best institution in Luxury Hospitality and Tourism.

Les Roches, with whom the ULPGC pioneered the agreement between the two institutions, is now the second-best institution in the world for luxury hospitality and tourism. (see the news)

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) made history by becoming the first public university to sign an academic agreement with Les Roches, one of the world’s most prestigious private institutions for luxury hospitality and tourism.

The agreement signed a couple of years ago, remains in effect and takes on even greater significance after learning that Les Roches has climbed to second place worldwide in its category, according to the QS World University Rankings 2025.

Thanks to this agreement, the International Bachelor’s + Master’s Program of High Academic-Practical Specialization in Hospitality and Luxury Tourism was created. This program allows third-year students of the Tourism and Business Administration (ADE) degrees from the Faculty of Economics, Business, and Tourism of the ULPGC to pursue their fourth year at Les Roches. There, students can specialize with a master’s degree in International Hospitality Management or Marketing Management for Luxury Tourism at the Marbella (Spain) or Crans-Montana (Switzerland) campuses. Upon their return, they validate their training, thus obtaining both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

The agreement also includes significant financial benefits for students, offering up to a 50% tuition discount for those with an outstanding average grade and a 30% discount for those with a B average. During the four years of the agreement, the collaboration between the ULPGC and Les Roches continues to promote specialized training in tourism, the exchange of students (17 so far) and teachers, the development of joint research, and academic development in a key sector for the global economy. With this agreement, the ULPGC reaffirms its commitment to excellence and internationalization, consolidating its position as a benchmark in public tourism education. For its part, Les Roches has continued its rise in international rankings, achieving its best-ever position of number 2 in the world in its category in 2025.

This recognition reinforces the institution’s prestige and the value of the agreement reached with the Canary Islands University.
