Information session on the Degrees at FEET and academic guidance activities in secondary schools

INFORMATION SESSION ON THE DEGREE IN ECONOMICS

On 27 January 2026, the Faculty of Economics, Business and Tourism welcomed students from several secondary schools in Gran Canaria, who had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the Degree in Economics.

During the session, students learned what economists do through a series of talks delivered by faculty members, engaged in discussions with current degree students, and participated in the final round of the Economics Competition, which had attracted more than 300 students.

This year’s winners were Álvaro Santana (1st prize, IES Cruce de Arinaga), Sofía Rodríguez (2nd prize, IES Casas Nuevas), and Álvaro Ramírez (1st prize, IES Casas Nuevas).

The Faculty would like to thank the teachers and students from the participating schools, as well as Professor Juan Luis Jiménez from the Department of Applied Economic Analysis, for his initiative in organising the event.

ACADEMIC GUIDANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

At the same time, the Vice-Deans responsible for the degrees in Business Administration and Management, together with the Vice-Dean for Tourism, are visiting secondary schools to present the Faculty’s academic programmes and support students in their university choices.

These information sessions introduce the degrees in Business Administration and Management, Economics, and Tourism, as well as the related double degrees, and explain career opportunities and academic pathways to help students make informed decisions aligned with their interests.

Within this framework, the Faculty participated on 11 February 2026 in the 15th Guidance Days organised by Colegio Arenas Sur and carried out its first visit on 21 January 2026 to IES Cruce de Arinaga.

51 FEET STUDENTS ARE “AUDITORS FOR A DAY”

For the third year in a row,  Margarita Mesa Mendoza and Sonia Granado Suárez, lecturers from the Department of Financial Economics and Accounting, have collaborated with the Territorial Group of the Instituto de Censores Jurados de Cuentas de España (ICJCE) to make the “Auditor for a Day” event possible—an initiative that allows students to experience the professional world of auditing from the inside.

During the event held on January 30, 51 students from the Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (ADE) and its corresponding double degrees had the opportunity to spend a day at various auditing firms, accompanying professionals in their daily work and gaining firsthand insight into how the field operates. Based on the feedback, it was a highly enriching experience that gave them a new perspective on auditing and its role in society and the economy. Some of the comments shared by participants were:

“I think the most enriching part was meeting the auditors in their own workplace—it’s not just a talk, but a real way to understand what day-to-day life is like in this type of company” (Jeremy Ramírez Dieppa).

“I found the experience very interesting, and it especially caught my attention as a career path, to the point that I would like to work in auditing in the future” (Ana Hernández García).

“The experience really changed my perception of the auditing profession […]. In short, I learned a lot and realized that financial accounting is not as mechanical as it sometimes seems from the outside” (Aitor Romano Hernández).

Initiatives like this are essential for building bridges between the university and the business world and for helping our students explore potential career paths. We remain committed to this type of collaboration that connects academic learning with professional practice.

We would like to sincerely thank the ICJCE for once again involving students from the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and in particular, Javier Álvarez Cabrera, Ángeles Díaz Peralta, and Soraya Gómez, for their dedication to organizing this activity. Thanks to their efforts and the collaboration of all the participating auditing firms, a record number of places were offered this year, creating even more opportunities for our students to gain first-hand knowledge of this profession.

We also extend our thanks to our colleagues from the Department of Financial Economics and Accounting, who organized the students and coordinated with the ICJCE to ensure the smooth running of the event.
