EVENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2026: 8M – Reading of the CRUE Manifesto

On March 6, Vice-Dean Carmen García Galindo read the CRUE manifesto to commemorate International Women’s Day, under the UN Women slogan: “Rights. Justice. Action for ALL women and girls.”

The manifesto states the following:

The slogan “Rights. Justice. Action for ALL women and girls” challenges our institutions, whose mission is to generate, transmit, and apply knowledge through research, teaching, and knowledge transfer.

In the university sphere, defending women’s rights means guaranteeing their full participation in academic, scientific, and professional life, without barriers, gaps, or discrimination. It means promoting safe environments free from harassment and violence, and making equal opportunities a real and
effective principle, beyond a mere formal declaration.

Justice requires us to analyze reality through a gender lens and act accordingly. Despite the progress achieved and the women who have paved the way in academic and scientific fields, gaps and obstacles persist that limit women’s progress in research careers on equal terms and hinder their access to decision-making and leadership spaces. Correcting these inequalities is not a symbolic issue. It is a matter of justice that strengthens the quality, excellence, and integrity of university action. Universities cannot be fully just while part of their talent remains invisible and underrepresented.

Action implies courage, responsibility, coherence, and sustained commitment. It means moving from words to deeds by consolidating and evaluating equality policies, supporting the development of female scientific vocations, and eliminating structural biases that continue to affect the evaluation, funding, and recognition of women’s merit. It also means strengthening cooperation among universities, public administrations, the productive sector, and civil society to build a more inclusive and equitable educational and scientific ecosystem.

On this International Women’s Day 2026, the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) reaffirms its commitment to a university free from inequality, diverse in its leadership, co-responsible in care, and exemplary in the active defense of human rights.

From here, we urge everyone to actively advocate for rights, justice, and action for ALL women and girls. We especially call on those who study, research, teach, and work in our universities to lead by example. Every member of the university community is called upon to take responsibility and work together to transform our institutions into lasting spaces of equality and progress.

The reading was attended by students, faculty members, and members of the PTGAS (Technical, Management, and Administrative and Service Staff).

The Digital Euro: What You Need to Know

Last Friday, 27 February, the conference entitled “The Digital Euro: What You Need to Know” took place. It was delivered by Mariana Moyúa, a specialist in the Innovation in Payment Methods and Infrastructures Division at the Banco de España.

The session was attended by a large group of students and faculty members who filled the room and actively participated in the Q&A, reflecting the strong interest in this highly topical issue.

During her presentation, the speaker — who also holds a degree in Economics from the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria — clearly and accessibly explained what the digital euro is, how it would differ from current electronic payment methods, and the main motivations of the European Central Bank in promoting this project. Among these, she highlighted the need to adapt the European monetary system to the increasing digitalisation of the economy, to strengthen the euro area’s strategic autonomy in payments, and to ensure that citizens continue to have access to a form of public money in the digital environment.

She also presented the estimated timeline for the development and implementation of the digital euro, stressing that it is a gradual process, subject to institutional decisions and to the establishment of a specific regulatory framework.

The conference underscored the importance for future economists and finance professionals of understanding both the challenges and the opportunities posed by the digital transformation of money, in a context in which technological innovation is redefining the functioning of payment systems and, more broadly, the international financial system.

Information session on the Degrees at FEET and academic guidance activities in secondary schools

INFORMATION SESSION ON THE DEGREE IN ECONOMICS

On 27 January 2026, the Faculty of Economics, Business and Tourism welcomed students from several secondary schools in Gran Canaria, who had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the Degree in Economics.

During the session, students learned what economists do through a series of talks delivered by faculty members, engaged in discussions with current degree students, and participated in the final round of the Economics Competition, which had attracted more than 300 students.

This year’s winners were Álvaro Santana (1st prize, IES Cruce de Arinaga), Sofía Rodríguez (2nd prize, IES Casas Nuevas), and Álvaro Ramírez (1st prize, IES Casas Nuevas).

The Faculty would like to thank the teachers and students from the participating schools, as well as Professor Juan Luis Jiménez from the Department of Applied Economic Analysis, for his initiative in organising the event.

ACADEMIC GUIDANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

At the same time, the Vice-Deans responsible for the degrees in Business Administration and Management, together with the Vice-Dean for Tourism, are visiting secondary schools to present the Faculty’s academic programmes and support students in their university choices.

These information sessions introduce the degrees in Business Administration and Management, Economics, and Tourism, as well as the related double degrees, and explain career opportunities and academic pathways to help students make informed decisions aligned with their interests.

Within this framework, the Faculty participated on 11 February 2026 in the 15th Guidance Days organised by Colegio Arenas Sur and carried out its first visit on 21 January 2026 to IES Cruce de Arinaga.

51 FEET STUDENTS ARE “AUDITORS FOR A DAY”

For the third year in a row,  Margarita Mesa Mendoza and Sonia Granado Suárez, lecturers from the Department of Financial Economics and Accounting, have collaborated with the Territorial Group of the Instituto de Censores Jurados de Cuentas de España (ICJCE) to make the “Auditor for a Day” event possible—an initiative that allows students to experience the professional world of auditing from the inside.

During the event held on January 30, 51 students from the Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (ADE) and its corresponding double degrees had the opportunity to spend a day at various auditing firms, accompanying professionals in their daily work and gaining firsthand insight into how the field operates. Based on the feedback, it was a highly enriching experience that gave them a new perspective on auditing and its role in society and the economy. Some of the comments shared by participants were:

“I think the most enriching part was meeting the auditors in their own workplace—it’s not just a talk, but a real way to understand what day-to-day life is like in this type of company” (Jeremy Ramírez Dieppa).

“I found the experience very interesting, and it especially caught my attention as a career path, to the point that I would like to work in auditing in the future” (Ana Hernández García).

“The experience really changed my perception of the auditing profession […]. In short, I learned a lot and realized that financial accounting is not as mechanical as it sometimes seems from the outside” (Aitor Romano Hernández).

Initiatives like this are essential for building bridges between the university and the business world and for helping our students explore potential career paths. We remain committed to this type of collaboration that connects academic learning with professional practice.

We would like to sincerely thank the ICJCE for once again involving students from the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and in particular, Javier Álvarez Cabrera, Ángeles Díaz Peralta, and Soraya Gómez, for their dedication to organizing this activity. Thanks to their efforts and the collaboration of all the participating auditing firms, a record number of places were offered this year, creating even more opportunities for our students to gain first-hand knowledge of this profession.

We also extend our thanks to our colleagues from the Department of Financial Economics and Accounting, who organized the students and coordinated with the ICJCE to ensure the smooth running of the event.
